What are Evaluations for Child Protection Matters? |
When parenting comes into question due to child abuse or neglect, social workers, legal counsel, and judges often turn to psychologists for expert guidance. Child protection evaluations may be requested for information regarding a parent’s caregiver capacities, risk and protective factors associated with placement or visitation, a child’s emotional or psychological needs, or intervention strategies that may assist parenting or child development. Evaluations may be requested at various points and may serve different functions depending on when they are requested. The overarching question in child protection evaluations is, “What is in the child’s best interest?” but the specific focus varies with the referral concerns.
Types of Evaluations for Child Protection MattersThe two most commonly requested evaluations for child protection matters are Parenting Capacity Assessments (PCAs) and Risk Assessments (RA).
