What is a Psychoeducational Assessment?A psychoeducational assessment is a type of psychological assessment that focuses on the relationship between variables we consider psychological (e.g., intelligence, cognitive abilities, attention, processing speed, social skills, adaptive skills, emotional-behavioural functioning, etc.) and the acquisition of academic skills and classroom performance (e.g., difficulty completing work, following classroom routines, or relating positively to peers). Because the focus is on the acquisition of academic skills and classroom performance, a psychoeducational assessment is typically done with children and adolescents. At Evaluate, we conduct psychoeducational assessments with children and adolescents aged 5 to 19.
Psychoeducational EvaluationsWe offer psychoeducational evaluations (sometimes you'll hear people call these 'psych-eds') to help parents and teachers develop deeper understandings of their children and students, respectively.
When a parent or teacher contacts us about a psychoeducational assessment, we start by asking what the parent or the school is concerned about and what they want to know. We then tailor an evaluation that aims to (a) answer the parent's question(s); and, (b) give the parent specific information that relates to their concern or the concern of the child's school. The goal for all of our assessments is to discover each child's unique learning profile and how to improve their learning effectiveness, at school and home. A psychoeducational assessment can give you invaluable insights and information. Here are some reasons to consider a psychoeducational assessment for your child:
What Does A Psychoeducational Assessment Involve? You will receive:
What Happens During An Assessment? The first step in an evaluation is a parent consultation, where we discuss the questions / concerns that you have about your child. Based on the information you provide and the questions you want answered, a specific plan is designed for your child's evaluation. After this parent consultation, we will ask you to gather, and provide copies of, records that might be helpful (for example, school report cards) - unless you've already provided us with these. We may also ask you to fill out some questionnaires and parent-measures about your child. In addition, we may ask your child's teacher to give us some information and / or fill out some questionnaires and teacher measures about your child.
The next step is testing, which is usually a one day event during which your child completes many different kinds of tasks. These interactive tasks are designed to find out the unique ways that your child thinks, processes, and learns. Test day activities might include:
After testing, you will attend a feedback session where we give you personalized information about your child's profile and specific recommendations to maximize his / her / their potential. You'll have ample time to ask questions. After the feedback session, but on the same day, you will receive a written report that summarizes the assessment results and recommendations. |
